One fixed concept in AS is that exons do not behave randomly, i.e. they are either "constitutive" (strong) or "alternative" (weak).
Usually, skipped exons are of this latter type. They are also indicated as "cassette exons".
Often, alternative exons are also classified as "symmetric" (or non-symmetric).
