Several links to Tutorials from HGP and NCBI
The purpose of this book is to provide students with basic historical knowledge of teh Human Genome Project and what it gave to our current knowledge and databases.
1. History of the Human Genome Project
Tutorials.
The website of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) diplays sevarla tutorials and other information about the Human Genome Project.
This is the website: http://www.genome.gov/
The Educational section contains several chapters:
From the technical point of view, in order to obtain basic knowledge on the steps HGP Scientists followed to reach the complete sequence, please go to:
Online Education Kit: Understanding the Human Genome ProjectHere you find several links to video and animatios, the most relevant to our discussion are:
The first "How to sequence a Genome" is a collection of 12 animations: they take overall less than 15 minutes: you can watch the through YouTube as a continuous.
The second "Bioinformatics" gives you 4 chapters where you find basic elements of sequence comparison, data mining a few basic important points.
Reading is especially recommended for those students that did not follow Bioinformatics courses before, but also more "expert" Students will consolidate their backgrounds.
2. Basic Glossary for non-biologists and other utilities
Other utilities
The website of NIH Genome also provides an illustrated Glossary that may be really helpful especially to those Students that do not have consolidated biological background. For each entry, you find a short text explaining the item, then you may find Profiles, Illustration and or Animations.
There are many other educational tools on this website (certified!). A directory is available:
